Our last big adventure was a week long camping trip to Hawley Lake in Northeast Arizona. We went the last week of August. We borrowed a camper from one of Scott's friends and set out into the great unknown. We had never taken the kids camping before this. Sure we have taken them to the mountains and gone fishing, but always stayed in hotels. So we were excited to be roughing it in the camper. (Side note: B.C. before children Scott and I went camping all the time in an actual tent. We would go for a week at a time and loved it so we thought no biggie with kids........) The first few hours, no minutes were great. We picked out our campsite and then rushed down to the lake to do some fishing. Within minutes the boys were in the lake and taking their clothes off. So one by one I drove them back to the campsite to change ( of course they could not go at the same time). Then it started to rain. Just a short time that afternoon and we were able to have a fire. The next day it rained, and rained and rained. It continued off and on for the next few days. Lots of mud and very cold. But we had fun! We still fished and caught craw fish, which we still have one to this day. We spent some "quality" time in the now shrinking trailer. We did puzzles, played games and thanks to mommy's excellent planning skills we had coloring books, a few toys and for a short time a DVD player. Which would not hold a charge. Oh well we survived. We did a lot of back road driving and saw Turkey, Elk and Deer. And of course the occasional Cow. There are so many cows. Just for future knowledge if you decide to camp at Hawley Lake remember to bring rope and shiny little flags to place around camp. Apparently this keeps the cows away. We did not do this however and had cows in our trash and licking our griddle every morning. We would wake up to them bellowing and knocking into the trailer. Ah the wild. By the 5Th day it started to clear up and we did a lot of fishing and playing. And by the 6Th day we were ready to go home. We had so much fun. It really was our first long vacation where it was just our little family. The boys ask just about every day when are we going camping again! We are definitly going again next summer and maybe even try an actual tent.
